"I consider myself more a stylistic documentarian than a conceptual artist. Through my camera lens I frame, compose, and record my surroundings, those blink-of-an-eye moments that sometime seem to pass without notice: a tall fleeting urbanscape, the soft rural landscape, a charasmatic musician. In the studio, I use these photos as a foundation for shape, value, and composition in my work. A primary based palette is then used to exaggerate and distort the hues, making them as rich and vibrant as possible.
Ultimately, the contrast between value and shape is more important to me than achieving a realistic representation of my subjects. When I feel I have attained a balance of form, value, and color, I finalize the piece with a loose gestural outline in opaque inks, representative of the positive and negative energy that emcompasses everyone and everything around us."
